Fragments

Collective and educational land-art.

Created like a puzzle, Fragments of Belle-Île-en-Mer is a monumental, collective and ephemeral artwork that draws the island from the sky. It’s made up of raw natural elements gleaned on site by the artist and 4th-grade pupils from Michel Lotte secondary school, during a month-long residency in a school environment. After a phase of dye research with the students on these unusual materials, the elements were coloured with Breton persicaria indigo. In this way, the very materials used in the land-art represent the island territory. The ocean footprint, empty at its centre, is then colonised by the grass, gradually bringing out the island.

Fragments of Belle-Île-en-Mer is installed at the entrance of the Bois du Génie, in front of the municipal library, where preliminary artwork research is also on display. Revealed for the summer of 2024, this giant natural cartography will gradually evolve, fade and disintegrate under the action of the natural elements: rain, wind, sun, ...

The ephemeral nature of the work resonates with the current ecological disruption that is inexorably and exponentially transforming the territories. This educational and artistic project reflects this and raises awareness of the climate emergency.
